WHEN I TOOK YOU HOME

I wished for them to love you,
Accept you despite your ps and qs,
I wanted to elucidate them
My own folks, all of them,
I begged them to accept your culture,
And like two soluble solvents,
Love each other to become one,
I risked everything, when I took you home.

They accused you of effrontery,
I said you only talked improperly,
That your people were different,
I took one for you, right on the chest,
They said you revealed too much skin,
That you aimed to seduce other kin, I said your world was hotter than this,
I risked everything , when I took you home

When he smiled at you,
I thought he finally understood you.
He showed you around, the garden and the pool,
At last an informed man, I was a fool,
The innocent wink, the cheeky grin
They told me I dug my own grave, gritty and grim
I risked everything, when I took you home
